Hot Chocolate Bombs
The perfect treat for cuddling up with a fuzzy blanket and your favorite pajamas to watch some Christmas movies
With Covid-19 causing people to stay at home and find new ways to entertain themselves, families and individuals are getting creative in the kitchen. Hot chocolate bombs are all the rage this holiday season! Cocoa bombs are chocolate spheres that have a cocoa mix, sprinkles, and lots of marshmallows inside of them. When hot milk is poured on top of these delicious bombs, they melt and break open, revealing the yummy hot chocolate! They are a perfect treat for cuddling up with a fuzzy blanket and your favorite pajamas to watch some Christmas movies. As well as make great gifts for friends and family! Not to mention, there is something very satisfying about watching a chocolate sphere break open to reveal lots and lots of gooey marshmallows and other goodies of choice, such as crushed candy canes or caramel, to fill up your favorite mug. Of course, they can be bought at various shops, but it is more fun to make them! There are so many different variations of bombs to be explored. Keep reading to learn about the supplies needed to make hot chocolate bombs and where to buy the tools at.
1). Candy Wafers Chocolate. The key to making a great chocolate bomb is the brand of chocolate that is used. Many people use semi-sweet chocolate chips or almond bark. Personally, I use “Candy Wafers Chocolate.” I find it easy to work with and the milk chocolate is absolutely scrumptious with the hot chocolate powder. As long as you have a good quality chocolate bar or wafers, you will be set!
2). Silicone Sphere Mold. Silicone sphere candy molds can be found at most local craft stores, such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby.
3). Spoon or a Paintbrush. It may seem a little weird to need a paintbrush in the kitchen, but the chocolate needs to get into the mold somehow!
4). Piping Bag: This will be used for decorating! If a piping bag is unavailable, Ziplock bags work just nicely! Just fill the baggy with chocolate and snip off a corner big enough for the chocolate to come out. Life hack!
5). A Hot Plate or Griddle for sealing the chocolate bomb. If using a hot plate, just place a microwave-safe plate into the microwave for one minute. If using a griddle, put the griddle on low heat. A cookie tray that is placed in a 200-degree oven for ten minutes would work too. I make chocolate bombs for my business and personally recommend a hot plate. It is safer, quicker, and less messy.
6). Hot chocolate mix. If you are making a few hot chocolate bombs for some friends and aren’t planning on making anymore than a dozen, then I would suggest getting packets of hot cocoa so that it’ll be cheaper to make and you won’t have a lot of unwanted cocoa. I use Nestle hot chocolate powder that comes in a big can because I make them to sell daily. It all depends on what you want!
7). Mini marshmallows of choice. I use white mini marshmallows for the holiday hot chocolate bombs and get them from Hyvee. Rainbow marshmallows would look pretty cool too. This is the fun part, so get creative with this!
8). Any other decorative goodies. Crushed candy canes and sprinkles are very popular topping choices. Salted caramel, crushed Oreos, cinnamon, nutmeg, and mints are also good ideas. The possibilities are endless.
