Chiefs Weekly: Too Close For Comfort

The Chiefs were up 27-0 at one point and out of nowhere, the Broncos made a comeback which almost resulted in a Chiefs loss.

Chiefs Offensive Notes

The Chiefs’ offense had a lot of flashes. The Chiefs’ two main stars on offense Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes almost sold the game for the Chiefs. Mahomes had 3 INTs which he has not done since week 14 of the 2020 season. Kelce on the other hand dropped multiple passes that were very catchable. The stars of the offense though were both running backs, Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon. Pacheco was averaging 5.4 yards per carry and McKinnon had 112 receiving yards with 2 touchdowns. The big problem was Andy Ried, when Pacheco was hot and running very well he still insisted on passing even though Mahomes was struggling. The Chiefs have been a pass-first offense for a while now, but Andy Ried needs to realize that he needs to run when Pacheco is hot.

Notable Offensive Players

  • Isiah Pacheco (13 CAR – 70 YDS – 5.4 AVG)
  • Jerrick McKinnon (7 REC – 112 YDS – 2 TD)
  • Juju Smith-Schuster (9 REC – 74 YDS – 1 TD)

Chiefs Defensive Notes

The Chiefs’ defense was looking great, but then they got sloppy. They were up by 27 and they looked like they were not trying as hard as they should have. This led to the Broncos making a comeback, but the Chiefs’ turnover ended up getting them the win. The Chiefs had 2 turnovers and 6 sacks. We saw huge games from Chris Jones, Willie Gay Jr. and Chris Jones. Jones especially had a sack and after that sack, they doubled him the rest of the game and he was still a problem getting to the QB. Willie Gay Jr played a near-perfect game from the LB spot getting a pick 6, a TFL and 5 tackles.  Nick Bolton on the other hand the usual star of this Chiefs’ defense had a very quiet game though not really making any big plays.

Notable Defensive Players

  • Willie Gay Jr (1 INT – 1 TFL – 1 TD)
  • L’Jarius Sneed (1 INT)
  • George Karlaftis ( 1 Sack)
  • Mike Danna (1 Sack)
  • Frank Clark (1 Sack)
  • Juan Thornhill (1 Sack – 7 TCK)

The Chiefs are playing the worst team in the NFL next week, the Texans, so this is a game to take a break and hope for the Bills to lose soon so the Chiefs can go up to the number one spot in the AFC.
