What a weird game, but we came out with the win which is all that matters! The Chiefs had to deal with multiple injuries through this game and even with all of that we still came through and upset the Bengals.

Chiefs Offensive Notes

The Chiefs’ strong suit is their offense, but the defense hard carried them to this win, so we have a lot to unwrap with what happened to this Chiefs offense. Let us start with the rock of the offense, the QB, Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes played a solid game, but there were some plays that he could have done better. First is the wild passes, there are a lot of times when Mahomes will throw very risky passes that have a high chance of being intercepted. Another thing Mahomes could improve on is to not always go for the biggest play. I do know when Mahomes is scrambling out of the pocket and doing the most is when he is the best, but he needs to understand situations where he needs to throw away or take a check down. On to the offensive line, in pass block scenarios the O-line actually had a very solid game. In the run game though the O-line was very bad which is weird because they are usually one of the top run block O-lines in the NFL. At the start of the season, the Chiefs gave MVS (Marquez Valdes-Scantling) a three-year 30 million dollar deal which was looking like a very bad deal for the Chiefs, but MVS might have won us this game. MVS had 116 yards and one TD as well as some of the hardest catches I have ever seen. We also saw a good game out of Travis Kelce who at the start of the game was questionable with a back injury. In all, if the Chiefs’ run game was more efficient this game wouldn’t have been close, but the Chiefs’ run game was very bad, only getting 42 yards on 20 attempts threw all the runs. The Chiefs are playing the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl who have a very good defense, so the offense is really going to need to step up in that game or they will not scrape out another game like this.

Chiefs Defensive Notes

It was the Chiefs’ defense who single-handedly won the Chiefs this game. The Chiefs had five sacks, two coming from Defensive Player of the Year candidate Chris Jones, 1.5 from Frank Clark, and one from Chiefs’ first-round pick George Karlaftis. This Chiefs D-line looked amazing versus the Bengals in getting to the QB and stopping the run. This mostly has to do with Jones who played one of the best games I have ever seen from a defensive lineman ever. They did so well at stopping the run on the stat line that it looks like the Chiefs’ linebackers had bad games. They did not it is just that the D-line was stuffing the run all game. The Chiefs’ secondary coming into the year is one of the youngest units in the NFL. The Chiefs had L’Jarius Sneed who went down early in this game which left Chiefs first-round pick Trent McDuffie, 7th-round pick Jaylen Watson, and 4th-round pick Joshua Williams. The Chiefs’ secondary ended the game with two INT and made one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL crumble under the pressure. I also would like to praise Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo who coached a very good game.

The Chiefs finally beat the Bengals, putting their record against them to 1-3 since Burrow joined them. The Chiefs are playing the Eagles who are a very good team. I believe they might be better than the Bengals on both sides of the ball, so the Chiefs will need to be on their A-game when they play the Eagles on February 12th. Also, a little fun fact Travis Kelce will be playing his older brother Jason Kelce who is the Eagles Center, so only one of the brothers will be getting their second Lombardi, and be crowned the favorite of the family.
