Even after her passing, Mrs. Rachel Stone’s legacy continues to impact us through the fundraiser held in her name. The event not only celebrates her life but also helps to unite students and raise money for scholarships. What began as a way to remember a beloved teacher is beginning to grow into a tradition that many feel keeps her memory alive.
“It’s like she never retired. She was still a part of us when she did end up passing away, so I think it’s great that we’ve made it like she never left,” senior Ashlee Bake said.
For many students, the fundraiser stands out because of its purpose. Instead of just being another event, it directly supports future graduates through scholarship opportunities.
“It’s important because it’s raising money for her scholarship, which is really helpful to students who can’t afford to go to college,” Bake said.
Now under the leadership of Mrs. Warden, the fundraiser remains focused on supporting students while also bringing the community together.
“It just allowed us to support others that were supporting the scholarship so that we could offer it to students in the spring,” Mrs. Warden said. “I think it’s kind of bittersweet because this year’s senior class would be the last set of students that would have had her.”
Those who knew her say the scholarship reflects who Stone was. Remembered for her kindness and empathy, she made an impact on nearly everyone she met.
“Stone loved to help people. She loved talking to people, she was very much someone who looked out for just about everyone, and I feel like this fundraiser that’s going to benefit others is only going to help keep her need, wanting to help everyone,” senior Makayla Emry said.
The annual fundraiser does more than raise money, it also offers people a chance to come together.
“I hope it continues for a while because even though people won’t know who she is, it still brings the community together,” Mrs. Warden said. “And it’s kind of a nice kickoff for the 1st home football game. To bring the community together, bring our school together, and to have somewhere we can all meet prior to that.”
This year’s tailgate fundraiser will take place on September 12 before the first home football game.
