Every month the members of the German club meet to talk about German culture and try typical German traditions and food. To become part of this club, speaking German is not required, as anyone interested in German culture can join.
“It’s a club where we appreciate German culture, just really getting to know how Europeans in general, over in German speaking countries, what they celebrate, how their daily life looks, and just also learning a bit of language too,” junior Dayton Smith said.
During the meetings, the members of the club have the opportunity to try original food from Germany that is difficult to find in the US.
“The best part of this club would be that we get to try a lot of authentic German foods that I would otherwise not be able to try,” sophomore Mia Appelbaun said.
This club also develops creativity with some activities that the sponsor offers for special festivities like Easter.
“We do some crafts. We did a craft for Easter. We play some games, do some German culture trivia, and usually have snacks. Sometimes culture snacks. One time we had breakfast sandwiches that we made,” sophomore Nora Lightfoot said.
Learning about other countries’ cultures can be educational for everyone, especially for those who want to travel or study abroad.
“I plan to take German in college, and I hope to go back to Germany and I can use what I’ve learned just to be a better traveler,” sophomore Nora Lightfoot said.
The sponsor of this club, Mr. Arbeau, the German teacher at LSHS that hosts the German club in his class, lets the students experience German folklore. This creates an environment for the students that not only can learn more about German culture, but can also enjoy time with friends.
“He’s been really fun. He hosts a lot of parties in his room with snacks and drinks, which is awesome. He’s there to have a good time. It’s honestly a big social club. He does a really good way of meshing German culture for our Christmas parties. It’s not necessarily stuff you do here in the US. It’s like what they do in Germany. We had a Christmas market simulation, and then he brought in some blue wine. He brings in a cultural aspect to all the parties, and it’s a fun way to learn more about it,” junior Evan Nitsche said.
