Mrs. Goeke is a special education teacher at LSHS. She teaches personal finance, reading lab, and resource transition lab. This year is her 2nd year teaching here but she has also taught at other schools.

“The 1st school I taught at was called Nots Environmental Science Magnet School in the Kansas City, Missouri School District, and I taught there for three years. It was a cool little school that was all focused on science, environmental science. It was elementary. I taught there for 3 years, and then I taught at Meadowmere Elementary in Grandview for nine years. Then I taught at Grand View High School for six years and this is my 2nd year here,” Mrs. Goeke said.

Mrs. Goeke has learned a lot from her experience as a teacher.

“When I was a new teacher for the first years of teaching I had the wrong mindset. I thought it was about me. Once I figured out it’s not about me, this is a service industry. This is about serving your students. It helped me approach teaching in a different way. I didn’t take things personally anymore. It made me more open to adjusting my instruction when it wasn’t making a difference,” Mrs. Goeke said.

Mrs. Goeke uses her teaching style well and she effectively engages with her students.

“It helps a lot to have her be hands on instead of her being laid back at her desk 24/7 because I’ve had some teachers who are like that and it’s not helpful whatsoever. She usually comes to you and asks if you need help or even decides that you need help based on your grades in her own class and figures out what the problem is and tries to help you a long way,” senior Zachary Thornton said.

She shows an interest in her students and goes out of her way to help them.

“An assignment or test dropped my grade down. And she came to me, and she was wondering what happened. I said I didn’t do good or something, and then, she asked me did you talk to the teachers? Did you get it fixed? She’s kind of on top of things,” sophomore Bell Huzzlefinger said.

Mrs. Goeke has already had such a positive effect on LSHS in her 2 years at our school. Students look forward to seeing how she affects more in the years to come.
